In addition to communication skills, here are several qualities that a successful insurance agent should possess, at least to some degree.

People skills

Some insurance agents and brokers say that the hardest part of their job is earning the trust of their client. However, this can be accomplished by listening carefully to what your clients and prospects have to say. In addition, customers who are able to get a hold of their agents when they need them are more likely to stay happy and reassured, so timely responses to inquiries and phone calls are a must. Lastly, a good agent is tactful and knows how to help a client see financial reality clearly by listening and empathizing with them.

Strong Personality

Insurance agents with a high energy level are more likely to encourage their clients to buy something. It’s also important to be persistent. Rejection is common in this field, but remaining positive will help a good insurance agent closer to someone who will say “yes”. With this in mind, it’s also important for the successful insurance agent to be honest. Telling the truth up front will win you the clients’ respect and trust.

General Knowledge

Typically, a good insurance agent will be able to offer a comprehensive selection of products and services that can meet any reasonable need a client may have. Also, a successful insurance agent will know more than how to simply sell a policy. They will need to understand the tax and legal aspects of the products he or she sells and how they are designed to fit into a client’s overall financial situation.

These are just a few of the qualities that insurance agents should possess to be successful. It’s important to stay up to date within your field and knowledgeable about the products that your or your agency sells. Every agency is different, and the resolutions you create for your clients should reflect those differences.
